Barnsley have announced that England Under-21 international Jacob Butterfield is out for the season after damaging his left anterior cruciate ligament.

The midfielder sustained the injury in a robust challenge with Leeds' Michael Brown in their New Year's Eve clash but was only expected to be sidelined for three to four weeks.

Following an MRI scan, Butterfield will undergo surgery on Friday with the Tykes, ruling him out for the rest of the current npower Championship campaign.

The 21-year-old made his debut for Barnsley's first team back in 2007 and became the club's youngest ever captain in September.

He was called up to the England Under-21 squad by manager Stuart Pearce earlier in the season and has been linked with moves to Barclays Premier League clubs Everton, Wolves and Newcastle.
