Cleverly to return to ring in October
Nathan Cleverly’s return to the ring has finally been confirmed as a WBO light-heavyweight title defence against Ukraine’s Vyacheslav Uzelkov in Cardiff on October 27.
The 25-year-old’s last fight came in February with a unanimous decision victory over American Tommy Karpency.
After being forced to pull out of a fight with Robin Krasniqi at London’s Royal Albert Hall in April and failing to successfully negotiate bouts with names such as Bernard Hopkins and Carl Froch – as well as a return contest with Tony Bellew, whom he defeated last October – Uzelkov will now receive a crack at the gold in Cleverly’s fourth defence.
Cleverly won the WBO strap, initially as interim, with a UD over France’s Nadjib Mohammedi in December 2010.
He is undefeated with a record of 24-0, and looks forward to fighting in front of his home fans once again at the Motorpoint Arena, site of the Karpency victory.
“I had a brilliant reception at the Motorpoint Arena in February which was my first fight in Wales for over four years and the fans came out to support me so it’s great to return again for another big fight night in the capital,” Cleverly said.
“Uzelkov’s ranked in the top ten of three of the major governing bodies and has already mixed it with Beibut Shumenov for the world title so I know he’ll be a hard defence for me.
“I’ve seen some of his fights already and he looks strong and come forward which will be perfect for me.
“Every defence of my title is vital as I build towards a unification fight so I can’t afford to slip up against Uzelkov.”
