Murray holds world champ Sturm to draw
Felix Sturm retained his WBA middleweight belt despite being held to a draw by Briton Martin Murray in Mannheim.
Sturm was frustrated by Murray early on as the 29-year-old matched him blow-for-blow. Upping his intensity, the German ran away with the fifth and sixth rounds, only for Murray to bounced back once again and split the three judges.
The bout was scored 116-112 for Sturm, 115-113 for Murray and 114-114 by the judges, with Sturm retaining the title he won with a split decision over Matthew Macklin in June.
“We thought we’d won but you’re in Germany, in his own backyard,” Murray said. “We’re gutted we didn’t get the win but it’s expected in Germany.
“We’ve always known I’m world-class, I just needed that chance. I’ve shown it today, I took a major step up in class but I belong at that level.
“I took a couple of rounds to get into it and get flowing but I eventually warmed into it and went 12 rounds with a good world champion.”
