Nesbitt thunders to gold
Canada’s Christine Nesbitt thundered to 1500m speed skating gold ahead of fellow Olympic champion Ireen Wurst at the ISU World Cup in Heerenveen, Netherlands.
Nesbitt, who captured Olympic gold over 1000m on home soil in Vancouver, charged home in 1.55.68 seconds, 1.47 seconds ahead of home nation favourite Wurst, who is Olympic champion over this distance.
Russia’s Yekaterina Shikova finished closely behind in 1.57.17 to capture bronze ahead of fellow countrywomen Yuliya Skokova with Czech Martina Sablikova off the pace in fifth.
But over 10,000m, the home crowd has plenty to cheer about as Jorrit Bergsma lead a Dutch one-two-three to own the podium alongside second-placed Bob de Jong and Bob de Vries in third.
Finland’s Pekka Koskela edged ahead of Japan’s Joji Kato to strike gold by 0.01 seconds over 500m, while Dutchman Jesper Hospes narrowly held off America’s Tucker Fredricks by the same margin to clinch bronze, with Olympic champion Tae-Bum Mo of Korea down the field in sixth.
China’s Jing Yu produced a dominant display to secure gold in the ladies’ 500m, powering to a 0.52 second victory over Germany’s Jenny Wolf who sealed silver and the Netherlands’ Laurine van Riessen completed the podium with bronze.
