Defending champion Juan Martin Del Potro crushed Rui Machado 6-1 6-0 in the second round of ATP Estoril.

WBZ-TV's Jonathan Elias will be hosting Triangle's first ever tennis tournament at Bosse Sports in Sudbury on Saturday afternoon. - 0

The Argentine world number 10 made light work of the unseeded Portuguese to set up a quarter-final clash with Spain’s Albert Montanes.

Del Potro hit four aces and won 70 per cent of his service points in just over an hour to move on to a 24-6 record for 2012.

"I like to play on clay, I prefer hard courts obviously, but I have been working hard at home, before I came here," Del Potro said.

"This tournament is very important to my clay-court season and for my confidence ahead of the Masters 1000 tournaments and Roland Garros.

"Albert is a two-times former champion here and a very good clay-courter so it will be a tough match. I am looking forward to it."

Del Potro, a one-time top-five regular, slipped down the rankings after a series of injuries but has battled back into the top 10.

His quarter-final opponent Montanes, seeded seventh, dropped the first set against American Bobby Reynolds but won 4-6 6-4 6-3 in a two-hour epic.

Joao Sousa is also through to the quarter-finals after fifth seed Denis Istomin retired from their match in the deciding set with the score at 3-6 6-3 4-2.

Home competitor Sousa will now face fourth seed Albert Ramos for a place in the last four after the Spaniard comfortably beat Germany's Bjoern Phau 7-5 6-0.

  2. Thanks for the bite marshall and i am not a fed hater but anyone who defends sam are no better than him and i think some of your previous posts prove that. I did send another post (better worded) but it was not shown and this was for Mark.If you want to comment about mental disorders try losing the djokerbitch or nadull insults first then you might come across as someone who likes tennis and not just federer.

  3. Delpo can do very well on clay. He forced Ferrer and Nadal play their best tennis on their favourite surface in front of their home crowd last year in the Davis Cup final. He is a threat. Come on Delpo, I know you can do it.

  4. alchemist you have a funny sense of humour or perhaps you have sort of mental disorder if you think losing in 5 tough sets is being crushed? If that is the case what do you call Nadals 6-3 6-0 defeat to Federer last year? Rape or murder?

  5. Cup of tear for delP today; tomorrow will be more challenging. I love his devastating forehand; it's like a horse's kick it seems. But this should be his tournament again, provided he does what he does best. He was in a different league at the US Open '09, crushing Rafa in the semi and then taking Fed down at a moment when the Maestro was close to his masterful best, having just won his first French AND then Wimbledon.

  6. Alchemist, nice i know what Sam is talking about, nadal took only 6 games in total in their semi final at the uso, thats crushing indeed, or you just have to watch the final again, tough fifth set victory with alot of drama involved in that match is what you called crushing Fed too? hmm oke your a diehard Nadal fan and i do see Delpo can down nadal at the french though, and then again watch the davis cup final, whereas the first and half of the set was crushing nadal too, and that on his beloved claycourt, if nadal didnt play at home crowd, where every 1st serve was missed by delpo a roar for cheering nadal took place, he did lost that final too, me and alot of people would agree that too. Peace.

  10. As guaranteed Delpo Delpo crushed his opponent! Delpo the job is not done yet u need to crush nadal at the French just like u did at the 2009 us open! Crush him destroy him I know u can just believe in ur self nadal cannot handle ur power on any surface he beat u last year cause u were playing about 65 percent just play ur game ur more talented and gifted than nadal go get it champ!
