World Football - Star forced to quit after buying rivals' kit
Argentine football star Ezequiel Alejo Carboni has been forced to quit his club after he was spotted buying replica shirts of his top flight team's arch-rivals.
The Banfield midfielder - a former Serie A star with Catania - was photographed buying Lanus shirts for his two sons for Christmas.
Fans were enraged when the picture appeared in Argentine media, particularly given Carboni's poor start to the season, and the 32-year-old decided that it was best if he and his employers went their separate ways.
"I talked it through with the club's directors and my agent, and we realised that the atmosphere was not going to get better," said Carboni, who had made 14 appearances for the side and had six months left on his contract.
Carboni revealed that he was a lifelong Banfield fan when he signed for the club in the summer, but he spent seven years with Lanus earlier in his career. His sons both support his former club, and have even been signed up by its youth system.
