Serie A - Lazio beaten in Genoa
Lazio’s Serie A title challenge was dealt a huge blow after they suffered a 3-2 defeat to Genoa in a thrilling contest at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
The home side punished the visitors for a series of defensive howlers.
The game was barely 10 minutes old when the hosts took the lead through Rodrigo Palacio.
The inform striker met an in-swinging corner from the right with an improvised flick at the near post, that looped over Federico Marchetti and into the back of the net.
Things went from bad to worse for Edoardo Reja’s men when a catalogue of mistakes presented Genoa with their second goal.
Lazio’s defending didn’t improve after the interval. With just nine seconds on the clock a slip from Javier Garrido allowed Jankovic to net his second of the game and put Genoa 3-0 up.
The home side decided to reciprocate Lazio’s defensive generosity by giving away a very soft penalty.
The referee pointed to the spot following a clumsy challenge from Giandomenico Mesto on Senad Lulic and Ledesma fired home from 12 yards.
The visitors’ chances all but ended with five minutes to play when Mobido Diakite said too much to the referee, earning himself a red card.
However, Genoa managed to hold on and record their first victory over Lazio at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris since 1992.
