Morgenstern ensures Austrian clean sweep
Thomas Morgenstern led Austria to a clean sweep of ski-jumping golds as they took victory in the men’s team large hill event at the FIS Nordic Ski World Championships in Oslo.
Morgenstern, 24, and compatriot Gregor Schlierenzauer had already shared the individual crowns and after taking gold in the normal hill team event last Saturday there was more than an air of inevitability about the Austrian whitewash.
Andreas Kofler, who was part of the Austrian Olympic winning team in Vancouver, also grabbed his share of the limelight with a hill record jump of 141m as Austria racked up a total of exactly 500 points, over 40 points clear of Norway in second and Slovenia third.
The event was cut down to just a single round because of the wind and a massive jump of 136m by Slovenia’s Robert Kranjec was enough for them to leapfrog Germany and take an unexpected bronze.
