Season can't end quick enough for Adams

Vale manager Micky Adams is looking forward to his summer holiday after his side signed off "a difficult season" with a 3-0 win that ended Oxford's outside play-off chances.

Goals by Marc Richards, his 17th of the season, Sean Rigg and substitute Ben Williamson secured a top-half finish for Vale despite a 10-point penalty for going into administration.

Adams said: "It was important we finished the season well and it was a good win. [Oxford manager] Chris [Wilder] had to take chances and throw people forward in the second-half and it suited us to play on the break.

"We didn't have a right-back after Adam Yates turned his ankle, but the lads adapted well and I'm full of praise for them.

"They didn't get paid for five weeks after we went into administration and we lost a couple of games we shouldn't have done, but overall they have shown tremendous character during a very difficult time for the club.

"We would have finished with 69 points if we hadn't been docked 10, so this team has not been far away from making a real challenge. It's been a difficult season and I'm glad it's over and we can all go and have a nice holiday."
