Further gloss was added to Jim Furyk's superb campaign when the American was named the US PGA Tour Player of the Year.

Furyk, a triple winner in 2010, edged out compatriots Matt Kuchar, Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson and South African Ernie Els for the honour.

The elite quintet was nominated by the tour's player advisory council and player directors last month before the winner was determined by tour member voting.

"It's special to have your peers vote for you," Furyk told NBC television after US PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem announced the result during the third round of the Chevron World Challenge.

"I had a great season but you never know how it's going to wind up at the end. I feel honoured with all the great players on that trophy that have had that honour before. I am humbled by it.

"It's definitely exciting and it takes the sting out of those bogeys coming down the stretch," he added with a smile.

Furyk, winner of last year's Chevron World Challenge, bogeyed the last two holes at Sherwood Country Club on Saturday for a one-under-par 71.

One of the steadiest players in the game despite an unorthodox swing, Furyk was the front-runner for the tour award after being named the PGA of America's Player of the Year last month.

The 40-year-old ended his 2010 campaign with victory at the Tour Championship in September when he also landed FedExCup honours and a $10 million bonus.

"It's definitely not a huge surprise but there are a lot of other guys who have had a great year," Furyk said.

Former world number one Tiger Woods had won the award 10 times over the previous 13 years.

Furyk and Kuchar, who ended up leading the tour's money list, made the most of a forgettable year for Woods whose private life unravelled amid allegations of serial philandering.

Woods took a self-imposed exile of five months from the game but, with his marriage breaking up, struggled for form on the course before ending his tour campaign without a single title for the first time since he turned professional in 1996.
