Managerial reaction from Sunday's Premier League games, with Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti insisting that record signing Fernando Torres played well in the 1-0 defeat against his former club Liverpool.

Carlo Ancelotti: "The problem wasn't that Torres played - he did a good job on the pitch. We had difficulty finding enough space in front, because Liverpool defended very well and they put three defenders in the middle, and we didn't find the right way to attack them. We were too slow playing from the back. We didn't find the space.

"Fernando tried to do something, used his movement and did a good job. We have to work in training to combine with the other strikers, but that's normal. We have to give Fernando time to adjust to the shape, but I think that he will do it quickly."

Kenny Dalglish: "We approached it professionally. The players were fantastic in their approach to the game and their determination to win the match. As this club has always said, the most important people are the people who are at Liverpool Football Club. That's the way they approached the game. Our incentive was to get three points and that's what we did. Whatever someone wants to do with their life, that's entirely their choice.

"For me personally I came here to win three points and if Carlo Ancelotti had been playing up front I'd still have wanted the three points. The personnel and the opposition are not important to me. The only people who are important to me are those in red shirts."

Avram Grant: "I am not so happy, my birthday is cancelled. How can I celebrate? We didn't score and didn't win. It is not happy birthday but it is not me that is important, it is the team. We take a few steps forward and one back and we need to learn from this. We deserve to stay up but we need to do it. We cannot lose games like this.

"The disappointing thing is that we lost to a team near us and it is a game of six points. Until now we have won these games. It will be a battle until the end but we need to take points because we have the quality to do that."

Alex McLeish: "(Nikola Zigic) has upped his game and is at a good level now. He's an international player and it's been a challenge getting used to England. He's beginning to hold his own. He was pushed in the back for the goal but he managed to stay firm and get his head on it.

"Psychologically it was a huge win. The players were sat like ghouls watching the results come in on Saturday. I said: 'Don't watch it. You'll only get yourself upset if it doesn't go for you'."
