Tom Boonen retained the overall lead at the Tour of Qatar despite Garmin-Barracuda winning the stage two team time trial.

The Garmin squad of Tyler Farrar clocked a time of 12:38 seconds on the 11.3km course around the Doha MotoGP circuit.

That was seven seconds quicker than Boonen's Omega Pharma-QuickStep team but the Belgian, winner of the opening stage, still leads on GC from American sprinter Farrar.

They are on the same time with Farrar's team-mates Johan Van Summeren, Jacob Rathe, Thomas Dekker and Robert Hunter all three seconds back.

Mark Cavendish led Sky over the line in third place, nine seconds behind the winners, with Katusha (12:47), Liquigas (12:51), Radioshack (12:52), Greenedge (12:54), BMC (12:54), Lotto (12:55) and Rabobank (12:55) completing the top 10.

Britain’s ace sprinter, who was feeling unwell on the eve of the race, will have plenty of chances to reduce the 12 second deficit on fellow quickmen Boonen and Farrar with four flat stages left in the race.
