Twice Olympic champion Shani Davis continued his dominance of the ISU World Cup speed skating – winning the final 1500m race of the season in Holland to take his fourth consecutive overall crown.

Davis – gold medal winner over 1000m in both Turin and Vancouver – had only topped the podium once this season heading into the finale in Heerenveen.

But he was in fine form when it mattered most in Holland, finishing in a time of 1.45.92 minutes to take the decisive victory ahead of home favourite Stefan Groothuis in second (1.46.09) and Russian Ivan Skobrev in third (1.46.59).

In the women’s 3000m another Olympic champion, Czech Republic’s Martina Sablikova, took the overall World Cup title with Stephanie Beckert of Germany forced to settle for second.

Like Davis, Sablikova took the win on the day to guarantee her spot at the head of the rankings, with Beckert second in Holland and overall.

Another home favourite, Annette Gerritsen, won the 500m in 38.31 seconds with Germany’s Jenny Wolf - already crowned as overall champion ahead of Sunday’s final - forced to settle for second.
