Dokic ends nine-year title drought
Jelena Dockic won her first WTA title in nine years when she beat Lucie Safarova in the final of the Malaysian Open.
The Croatian-born Australian was on the back foot after losing the opening set 6-2 to Safarova, but fought back to take the second on a tie-break and then went on to take the third set to win 2-6 7-6(9) 6-4.
The victory for the 27-year-old former world number four is her first in a WTA-level event since winning in Birmingham in 2002.
“It was only at Brisbane in January that I won my first main draw WTA match in a year, so to have won a title in March is fantastic," she said.
"But it’s not just that… it’s the players I have beaten and it’s the way that I beat them. I was fighting, I was always positive and I showed so much mentally how strong I am - I even surprised myself.
"Obviously when you start winning matches and even titles, your appetite gets bigger. I really want to continue playing well and working even harder.”
