World Cup 2010 - Donovan: Rooney worn out
Donovan, 28, continued the US war of words with Fabio Capello’s side ahead of their Group C opener in Rustenburg on June 12.
"Rooney is one of the best players in the world, but the other part of all that is that he’s played a lot of games and he is tired," Donovan said.
"He is probably worn out after giving his all in so many matches in a demanding season - injuries too are all part of that."
Rooney picked up ankle and groin injuries at the end of the club season, and his absence derailed Manchester United’s bid to win domestic and European titles.
Donovan, who knows all about the Premier League after spending part of last season on-loan at Everton, thinks the busy English schedule has a lot to answer for.
"Things happen when players are tired," the LA Galaxy man continued. "When they just keep adding games to the schedule it makes it difficult not to be burned out coming into a World Cup.
"Big players, who play a lot of games in Europe, are arriving in South Africa right at the end of their season.
"But the problem isn’t just with Rooney. The entire England team will feel the pressure. There’s certainly more pressure on the England players than us."
