Boasson Hagen wins sprint finish

Team Sky strengthened its grip on the Criterium du Dauphine as Norway's Edvald Boasson Hagen clinched the squad's 26th victory of the season and Britain's Bradley Wiggins continued as race leader.

Unaffected by a big crash in the middle of the peloton within sight of the finish, Boasson Hagen easily won a fast and furious downhill bunch sprint ahead of Germany's Gerald Ciolek and Slovenian Borut Bozic.

Sky's 26 wins make them the second most successful team of the season behind top Belgian Classics squad Omega-Pharma Quick Step, who have 30.

"It's a nice day for the team, we have the yellow jersey and we did a good job to keep Bradley up there," said Boasson Hagen, a former Tour de France stage winner and victorious in his home race, the Tour of Norway, last month.

"It wasn't easy, but I got a good gap, and I'm happy. We're riding really strongly right now, with the lead for Bradley and now a stage win for me."

Belgian Classics top rider Philippe Gilbert attempted to ambush the pack as it roared into La Clayette but his bold move fizzled out 500 metres from the finish.

Defending champion Wiggins remains in the overall lead ahead of the race's first big challenge on Thursday, a 53.5 kilometre individual time trial. Australian Cadel Evans is in second, a second back, and Ukrainian Andriy Grivko in third.

"We'll keep our fingers crossed for Bradley," said Boasson Hagen, "but it's going well so far."

The race finishes on Sunday in Chatel.

  3. He was tipped as the most talented all-round future talent in the peleton a few years ago wasn't he. Always seemed to start his sprints a little early up until his win in the Tour last year which I think did him a world of good. Confidence is everything isn't it, the ability to hold back and trust yourself. Looked a little trimmer on the podium the other day however, could be the hi-tech Sky diet or just losing a bit of puppy fat. Having said that, not hugely different to Ulrich or even Vino back in the day. Great rider for Sky if he's in the tour however. May well be Cav's one man lead out in the sprints, then on the front for Wiggo on the flat when required. Great talent, certainly an asset.

  4. Elisabeth, :-), B Haggen is great but he looks like a couch potato who doesn`t even go out to vote. I remember his interview after winning a stage in TDF 2011, he didnt look like a cyclist, not at all :-). Watched cycling during Indurians and Armstrongs era, never seen anything like that :-). Wouldnt be surprised if we see skinny Boasson Haggen saying " I am a climber but started my career as a sprinter... hehe

  5. Schleck bashers getting mad at Cavendish basher, hypocrites. A lot of us are fed up with the 3-4 guys who come here just to bash Cav and you, Schleck Bashers, you are no different. You`re all the same. He is saying some idiotic things about Cav, just like the allegations you pull out of thin air /the boarder line insults you post about the Schlecks. ( Thumb me down I don`t mind... am just calling things by their name).
