Premier League - Swans move off, Gylfi eyes Reds

Wed, 06 Jun 09:05:00 2012

Iceland midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson admits he would be interested in a move to Liverpool to be reunited with former manager Brendan Rodgers after claiming his record-breaking move to Swansea is off.

FOOTBALL Gylfi Sigurdsson, Swansea City - 0

Last week the Swans agreed a £6.8 million transfer - almost doubling their record fee - to sign the player from Hoffenheim permanently after his successful four-month loan spell subject to a medical.

However, Rodgers' departure to Anfield cast doubt on the deal and Sigurdsson now does not think he will complete it - despite being keen to remain in the Premier League. He told mbl.is in his homeland: "It's just unclear at this moment where I will play."

He added: "I'd like to play on with Swansea since I was really happy there but after Brendan Rodgers left the club for Liverpool, that changed the situation.

"I expect not to stay at Swansea because of the uncertainty going on there as it is not clear who is boss.

"I have said that my desire to continue playing in the Premier League and Liverpool is completely considered.

"Liverpool is a big club that has a glorious history.

"English Premier League is the platform that I want to be and hopefully is that I continue to play in that division."

Sigurdsson has been in touch with Rodgers - a manager he rates highly - since he was installed as Kenny Dalglish's successor, which raises the prospect of him ending up at Anfield.

"I got in touch with Brendan when he was appointed Liverpool manager," he added. "I wish him congratulations and thanked him for a great time at Swansea."

  9. Lucky Liverpool, at £7 million he is a steal, and that's from a Swans season ticket holder who has seen most of his games. Strong, skillful, and a real eye for goal. Exactly what they need too, Rodgers will play a 3 man central midfield and they need a real attacking force to head that. If this move happens he will be in my fantasy football team! Gutted he is leaving as a Swans fan, but you cant begrudge anyone who does well for your club the chance to take on a new challenge, same as Brendan. Good luck to them.

  17. Harry showing lack of any football knowledge. So players like ba and cissi to newcastle for little money and not chased by big teams that makes them rubbish. Christopher got it right. A player is as good as his system and how he is played. Players that thrive is one team flop in another. Every team has there good and bad signings. Liverpool currently have had more than there fair share but you need to buy these players to find the gems. im excited about the season coming up. See what players come and what go. Rogers will bring and attacking attactive football to liverpool. And look for scorers and flair players. Something liverpool have lacked. Hope to see more or sterling and suso in coming season as well.

  20. To Harry #26, you have a point that other teams could get him for 6M and are passing, but not all cheap players fail and not all expensive players lead the league in their position. Also, there's a difference with pure quality and a player's value in a system. Players either fit in a system or don't, and this one clearly fits into the system that Rodgers will employ. For LFC, we've seen this week after week, as Carroll didn't fit into the system that Kenny had, not at all. He used to fit into the Newcastle strategy, but not with Kenny's tactics. It's rubbish when fans say that Carroll is worthless, he is big and strong and will score for teams that play to his strengths. The question is do you want to forget about the other 10 to play to 1 man's strengths? Perhaps Sigurddson wouldn't even have a seat on the bench for City or Madrid or Barcelona, but LFC will play in such a way that Sigurddson will excel. That's what we need, cheap players excelling, not the other way around.
