Netherlands rider Hofland beat out five breakaway rivals to win the 160.5km stage from Yutz to Luneville to finish ahead of Romain Bardet (France) and Matteo Mammini (Italy).

Dennis (pictured), who was second the opening prologue, finished sixth in that leading group to take over the overall lead from team-mate Michael Hepburn who finished in the peloton 26 seconds back.

Hepburn remains second but is 22 seconds back on Dennis on General Classification.

The Tour de l'Avenir is an eight-day race for national teams dubbed the "Tour of the Future" for U23 Tour de France prospects.

Felice Gimondi, Joop Zoetemelk, Greg Lemond, Miguel Indurain and Laurent Fignonall won the Tour de l'Avenir in the past and then went on to win 12 Tour de France titles between them.
