Fabio Capello is unlikely to play England captain John Terry in next Saturday's friendly against Spain, despite picking him in his squad for the match.

Capello has publicly backed Terry, who is currently under investigation for alleged racist remarks made to QPR defender Anton Ferdinand, but he admitted the Chelsea centre-back may not feature against the world champions

"On Friday I told him I don't know if he will play [against Spain] because I want to see new players and he was happy," Capello said. "If he does not play, it is only for football reasons. I want to see [Joleon] Lescott, [Gary] Cahill and [Phil] Jagielka play at the top levels."

The Mail on Sunday reports that Terry will play at least one half of the friendly against Sweden which comes three days after the Spain game.

Tottenham Hotspur hope to scupper the FA's attempts to poach Harry Redknapp from them to fill the England job by offering their manager a new contract.

The Sunday Mirror reports that Spurs are preparing a new three-year deal for their boss, who has 18 months left to run on his current contract.

The FA see Redknapp as their number one choice to replace Capello when the Italian boss steps down after next summer's European Championships.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy plans to open talks shortly with the man who led Spurs to the Champions League quarter-finals last season.

Even if Redknapp does leave Tottenham for a job he has admitted his interest in, a new deal ensures Spurs would be due a hefty compensation package from the FA.

Tottenham head a pack of eight clubs looking to sign David Beckham once the former England captain leaves LA Galaxy.

Beckham, 36, is nearing the end of his contract with the Major League Soccer franchise, and he could exit in style if he can help them win the MLS Cup before he leaves at the end of the year.

Tottenham welcomed Beckham to their Spurs Lodge training ground last winter to train with them during the MLS off-season, and the Londoners are now in pole position to sign him in January, according to the Sunday Mirror.

Queens Park Rangers and French giants Paris Saint-Germain are among the other clubs linked with a move for the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder, who is eager to play for Team GB at the 2012 Olympics.

However, the Sunday Express reports that Spurs are also facing the loss of two of their star players in Luka Modric and Jermain Defoe.

Levy had to fend off interest from Chelsea all summer long for Croatia playmaker Modric, but the Blues' stuttering start to the season could see them return in January with a renewed bid.

Meanwhile striker Defoe could be on his way to Aston Villa in search of first-team football after finding himself relegated to the bench due to the burgeoning partnership of Emmanuel Adebayor and Rafael van der Vaart.

Manchester City and Chelsea are among the clubs battling to sign Danish wunderkind Christian Eriksen.

The 19-year-old midfielder, who was the youngest player at last year's World Cup, impressed in Denmark's friendly against England in Copenhagen back in February and has been starring in the Champions League for Ajax for the past two years.

The Mail on Sunday claims that Chelsea will launch a 22 million bid for the teenager, but City are ready to go as high as 30m to get their man.

Blackburn Rovers are planning to offer Sven-Goran Eriksson a route back into the Premier League by appointing him as their director of football, so says the Sunday Mirror.

The former England boss, who was recently sacked by Leicester city following the Foxes' disappointing start to the season in the Championship, would come in to help beleaguered manager Steve Kean at Ewood Park.

If Kean fails to mastermind a halt to the club's terrible form - they have not won in their last six league games and are currently sat in the relegation zone - then Rovers owners Venky's plan to move Eriksson into the dugout.
