Ward, Britain's second ranked player behind Andy Murray, was bounced out by the Belgian 6-1 6-2 ahead of the prestigious tournament in California.

Ward struggled with the ball in his hand, winning just 46 per cent of points on his serve throughout the short match and failing to win a single point on his second serve in the opening set.

The world number 158 also failed to take any of the four break opportunities his opponent gave him, while Authom managed to win four breaks of serve to take him into the second round of qualifying.

The top three seeds in qualification Federico Gil, Tobias Kamke and Matthew Ebdon all progressed on a day of few surprises.

The Masters Series event proper kicks off on Thursday with the drawsheet boasting the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafa Nadal, Roger Federer and Murray.
