Wilhelm, who also won three gold and three silver medals at the 2002 Salt Lake City and the 2006 Turin Games, said the time had come to focus on her international management studies and her final race would be on March 27 in Russia.

"I achieved everything there was to achieve (in the sport)," the five-times world champion said.

"The Olympics in Vancouver were again a highlight but now it is time to leave the biathlon track to younger athletes."

The 33-year-old, nicknamed Little Red Riding Hood because of her trademark red hair and red cap during competition, is among the country's most successful and recognisable winter sports athletes.

"I want to complete my studies now and want to have as much fun in my job as I had chasing medals," Wilhelm said.
