Australia, who crashed out 4-1 to champions Italy in the first round in Hobart in February, beat Ukraine 5-0 last year to progress to the top tier for the first time since 2004.

Australia will start as favourites for the clash, having announced a strong line-up which included four players in the world's top 100.

World number four Samantha Stosur, along with Jarmila Groth (30), Jelena Dokic (61) and Anastasia Rodionova (72) are options for team captain David Taylor.

Ukraine's top players are sisters Alona and Kateryna Bondarenko.

Ukraine's second tilt for a place in the World Group in two years follows their 3-2 defeat of Sweden in the qualifying round.

The April 16-17 tie will be held in Melbourne.
