The Paris Saint-Germain skipper, 37, told TV station France 2 of his decision after reports that he was ready to continue for one more year.
"I’ve decided that this will be my last year," he said when asked if he would continue at the Ligue 1 club.
Makelele, who was regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the game, had previously hinted that he may continue, depending on the club’s ambitions.
"I’ve decided to make this statement to end the charade surrounding my actions," he added.
"Today, in agreement with the club president, I have decided not to continue my contract beyond May 16."
Makelele won 71 caps for the French national team.
