Norwich put a big dent in Tottenham's Champions League ambitions with a hugely deserved 2-1 victory at White Hart Lane thanks to goals from Anthony Pilkington and Elliott Bennett.
A defensive lapse from Spurs allowed Norwich to snatch the lead after 13 minutes, when Younes Kaboul blocked Aaron Wilbraham's shot and Kyle Walker went to clear, but his attempt ricocheted off King into the path of Pilkington, who calmly stroked the ball past Brad Friedel.
With half an hour gone, Norwich were denied a clear penalty when Ledley King clambered over Grant Holt, but the referee saw no infringement. Paul Lambert was incensed and his anger intensified minutes later when Tottenham broke and equalised through Defoe's deft chip over John Ruddy.
Despite this setback, the Canaries struck again midway through the second half, thanks to a wonderful strike from Bennett. He was allowed to venture forward unmarked and made Spurs pay by thumping an unstoppable 20-yard drive past Friedel.
Harry Redknapp's side searched in vain for an equaliser, and the result leaves Newcastle level on points with Tottenham in the race for fourth place.
