Watson halted in Birmingham
Heather Watson’s progress in the Aegon Classic at Edgbaston came to an end after a straight sets defeat to third seed Shuai Peng in round three.
The British number two pushed the Chinese star close in the first set, eventually coming out on the wrong side of a tie-break, before Peng’s class told in the second set and she completed a 7-6 6-1 victory.
Watson, 19, had reached the last 16 after surprising 15th seed Chanelle Schneepers in her first round before beating Misaki Doi.
World number 20 Peng, who had beaten another Brit, Naomi Broady, in the previous round now meets Marina Erakovic in the quarter-finals, after the New Zealander recovered from a set down to beat Italian Sara Errani 5-7 6-4 6-3.
Daniela Hantuchova also had things her own way in a 6-4 6-2 win against Alla Kudryavtseva, and set up a quarter-final showdown with Alison Riske, the last remaining American in the Birmingham tournament, after she edged a close tie with Aravane Rezai 7-5 6-7 6-2.
And the final last eight match-up will see Sabine Lisicki of Germany face Magdalena Rybarikova after the German recorded a third successive straight sets win, this time against Tamira Paszek, and Rybarikova weathered a gruelling first set against Arina Rodionova to triumph 6-7 6-0 6-1.
