The race is on to replace Fabio Capello as England manager - and Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp is currently the leading candidate by some distance.

Redknapp is odds-on with the bookies to secure the national job and the FA's press conference at Wembley on Thursday afternoon did little to diminish his hopes.

FA chairman David Bernstein gave a few clues as to the likely identity of the man chosen to replace Capello. Firstly, he admitted the FA would not exclude the possibility of appointing a foreign manager, but that its preference was to appoint an English or British candidate.

Bernstein said the FA would not rule out appointing a candidate on a job-share basis until the end of the season, meaning Redknapp could in theory combine his role with Spurs until the start of the Euro 2012 finals in June.

Perhaps most tellingly, the FA chairman admitted the governing body would take public opinion into account, even if it would not be guided by it exclusively.

Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand have already openly called for Redknapp's appointment, but is he the public's choice?
