Thor Hushovd's preparations for the Tour de France suffered a serious setback when the Norwegian broke his collarbone during training in Italy.
"I was out for training with some riders and accidentally ran into a little girl who was crossing the road," said Hushovd, who won the green jersey for the best sprinter on last year's Tour.
"First I tried to help her, but I soon realised that I was not able and there was something wrong. Unfortunately, I broke my collarbone. The little girl is fine."
The 32-year-old Hushovd, who also won the Tour green jersey in 2005, will undergo surgery in Switzerland, Cervelo's doctor Andreas Goesele said.
"Thor suffered a break in the middle of his left collarbone. He underwent an x-ray at a hospital in the city of San Remo (ITA) and is now on his way to the CrossKlinik in Basel for an operation tomorrow," Goesele said.
A broken collarbone could sideline Hushovd for three weeks but complications could lead to a two-month absence.
The Tour de France start on July 3 in Rotterdam.
