Haye-Chisora sells 17,000 tickets in one day

Boxing promoter Frank Warren has revealed that 17,000 tickets for the controversial heavyweight title fight between Dereck Chisora and David Haye were sold on the first day of sales.

Haye v Chisora: Will you be watching? - 0

The amazing sales figures come despite the cheapest seats costing £50 with pitchside seats costing at least £100 rising to £1,000 for the best seats near ringside.

The pair were involved in a brawl at a news conference following Chisora's defeat by WBC title holder Vitali Klitschko in February and neither holds a British licence so the bout is being sanctioned by the Luxembourg Boxing Federation.

Warren, who manages Chisora, says he struck the deal with Haye's manager Adam Booth with "no grumblings about purses or cuts" and went ahead with organising the fight at West Ham's Upton Park football stadium on July 14 despite the licensing issue.

The British Boxing Board of Control has now come out and said that anyone involved in the fight will be stripped of their licence.

Warren, told The Sun: "I’ve known Bruce Baker, the Luxembourg boxing federation representative here in England, for years and he didn’t understand why Chisora couldn’t box when he was not banned.

"Let’s make one thing clear - if Dereck had been banned by the British Board, he would not be fighting Haye. Once the idea of fighting Haye was out there, everything seemed to snowball.

“I even had an offer from Russia to stage the bout there!"

The BBBC however are furious at the prospect of the fight going ahead.

"For the avoidance of doubt, any member of the British Boxing Board of Control who participates in any way in such a promotion will be deemed to have terminated his/her membership of the British Boxing Board of Control and his/her licence therewith," they said in a statement.

"Those behind this proposal are not concerned with the interests of the sport of professional boxing.

"Any member who participates in such a promotion would bring the sport of boxing into disrepute and would wholly undermine the authority of the British Boxing Board of Control.

"This is nothing more than an attempt to circumvent the decision of the Stewards of the British Boxing Board of Control, in respect of Dereck Chisora, for monetary gain," it added.

Zimbabwe-born Chisora had his licence withdrawn by the BBBC in March following the brawl although he is appealing the decision.

Chisora had already been banned indefinitely by the World Boxing Council for what it called "one of the worst behaviours ever by a professional".

Former WBA world heavyweight champion Haye did not renew his licence after announcing his retirement last October.

"The British Boxing Board of Control has made its position clear to the Luxembourg Boxing Federation, the European Boxing Union and World Sanctioning Organisations and has already received strong support for its stance," the BBBC said.

  2. 17,000 tickets to watch these two clowns? ' A fool and his money are soon separated'. Now if it was for for two serious, talented, heavyweight boxers, it would be a different matter... but for those two third rate self publicising circus acts, you have to be a complete moron to either want, or witness, them 'fighting' each other. It gives Punch and Judy shows a bad name. D.

  3. Frank Warren has finally lost the plot big-time! They don't have licenses for the UK & should therefore box abroad, simple as that. Typical Warren trying to play god - ok then fine, but this may put the BBBC out of business as it already undermined them bigtime so let's hope Warren & his company is prepared to take over the reins otherwise British Boxing is finished as we know it. Anyone who takes part in this inc trainers & managers etc should hang their head in shame if they take part. And as for 20000 tickets going in a day? yeah all the 50 quid ones in the rafters!

Has nobody else noticed this? Boxing promoter Frank Warren has revealed that 17,000 tickets for the controversial heavyweight "TITLE" fight between Dereck Chisora and David Haye were sold on the first day of sales. TITLE fight?!!?!? Which TITLE are they fighting for exactly? neither of them holds a title! The whole thing is a joke, fools and their money are easily parted, I'll probably watch it though, maybe they can follow the lead of WWE and allow chair shots and Tables to be used, hopefully they'll cripple each other, Idiots! :)

  10. Yes, of course Gerry, and at the end of the day, money talks. That's why the Board will huff and puff, but the fight will go ahead and Warren will keep his licence. They have made this threat to strip any licence holder who is involved but there are too many precedents where they have been inconsistent and turned a blind eye in similar circumstances for them to be able to uphold a ban. And as you rightly point out, apart from fees paid by licence holders, Warren is their principle source of income. They are very old school and don't like to be disobeyed.

  11. I cannot help feeling that the BBBC is making a mess of a bad situation worse. Following Haye v Chisora pantomime in Germany BBBC were the last to react but too quick to grab a share of the boxers purse. This Haye v Chisora fight is inevitable, a must, and makes commercial sense in these hard economic times. BBBC might mistakenly argue that this fight, if allowed would bring the sport into disrepute, but all it will do is highlight the weaknesses of the BBBC. As a commercial venture, Frank Warren is taking a big gamble that he, fighters, promoters and the sponsors are sure to win with legal battles to follow with the BBBC. Regardless of what people think, if the first days sales are a good indicator, this fight will be a enormous financial success. As far as boxing is concerned, this is not the end but the beginning of a new chapter in British boxing history and in the world too. Who ever wins the fight can then look forward to a mega chalenge to one of the Klitschko broters where the Klitschko's can take advantage to share the bigger purse that they can only dream of by taking on fighters who have gone well past their sell by date!! If any one says that watching Vladimir's next fight is value for money than Haye v Chisora are either blind, stupid, lying or not willing to accept the simple economics let alone the realities in life. I say that this fight, if it goes ahead, will be the biggest single money generator than all other famous fights in the past.

  12. a quick question Lance! should the BBBC ban Warren would they not be biting off one of the hands that feed them? he promotes a lot of fights and fighters they surely would lose a lot of money over this.

  13. Fantastic. A fight virtually everyone wants to see apart from overbearing officials.

From Chicken, on Sat 12 May 9:39
  14. The biggest fight on July 14th won't be between Chisora and Haye, it will be between Frank Warren and the Board of Control. The Boards position has been made clear - any licence holder involved in this spectacle in any way will be deemed to have undermined the BBBC, and his licence will be revoked. Warren is Britains biggest promoter and manages a huge stable of up and coming boxers. He will arguie that the fight is licenced by the mighty boxing Mecca of Luxembourg but that won't wash with the board, who have been known to cut their noses off to spite their faces before. This whole thing will end up in the high court with Warren claiming restraint of trade by the BBBC who will have to strip him of his promoters and managers licence after the stance they have taken over this 'fight' if it, indeed, goes ahead.

You all complained the the Klitchkos are too boring, now something happens you get all upset.
