Key player: James Pritchard.

The Australian-born utility back, who qualified for the Canucks by virtue of his Canadian grandfather, has proved a prolific addition to Canada’s squad with his tryscoring and goalkicking abilities. The former rugby league threequarter became the first Bedford player to notch 400 points in a season last term.

2010-11 form:

6/11/10 v Belgium (Brussels) W 43-12

13/11/10 v Spain (Madrid) W 60-22

20/11/10 v Georgia (Tbilisi) L 15-22

27/11/10 v Portugal (Lisbon) W 23-20

8/6/11 v Russia (Esher, England) W 34-18

6/8/11 v USA (Toronto) W 28-22

13/8/11 v USA (Glendale, Colorado) W 27-7

World Cup pedigree:

Quarter-finals: 1991.

Group stage: 1987, 1995, 1999, 2003, 2007.

Record: P21, W6, D1, L14.

Most appearances: Rod Snow 14.

Most points: Gareth Rees 120.

Most tries: Al Charron, Morgan Williams 4.

High:

The 1991 tournament, when they reached the quarter-finals for the one and only time so far. The Canucks beat Fiji 13-3 and Romania 19-11, before losing narrowly to France 19-13. That left them with a quarter-final against mighty New Zealand and they put up a brave fight before succumbing 29-13.

Low:

The last World Cup, when they failed to win a match for the first time. The solitary game in which they avoided defeat was a 12-12 draw with Japan, but that result did not prevent them finishing bottom of their group, which also included Australia, Fiji and Wales.

Hero: Gareth Rees.

Canada’s record points-scorer also appears in the top 10 World Cup marksmen of all time – no mean achievement for a player from one of rugby’s lesser brethren. He was a key figure as well in the 1991 squad who qualified for the last eight.

Villains: Rees and Rod Snow.

For their involvement in the brawl during the 20-0 drubbing by South Africa in 1995 in Port Elizabeth, later labelled ‘The Battle of Boet Erasmus’, for which they were sent off along with Springbok James Dalton. All three were banned for 30 days.

2011 prospects:

They will do extremely well to avoid bottom place in a very strong group, as all their preparation matches have been against second-tier nations. Canada’s final placing will depend on their results against Japan and Tonga.

Group matches:

14/9/11 v Tonga (Whangarei)

18/9/11 v France (Napier)

27/9/11 v Japan (Napier)

2/10/11 v New Zealand (Wellington)
