Britain's Olympic gold medal cyclist Rebecca Romero has quit Team GB, with injuries and a loss of form ending her London 2012 dream.

Recent "setbacks" for the Beijing 2008 individual pursuit champion included the IOC’s decision to drop her preferred race from the 2012 programme, injuries that prevented her getting up to speed for the time trial, and her failure to make the GB squad for the Track Cycling World Championships in the Netherlands in March.

"Having suffered several setbacks at crucial points, I believe I’m no longer on a pathway which will see me fulfil my Olympic ambition to win a second Olympic gold medal," Romero, 31, said in a statement released by GB Cycling.

"I’m proud to have contributed to the cycling team’s great Olympic triumph in Beijing and I thank all the amazing people within British cycling who were central to my success. I wish my current team mates every success in London next year."

British Cycling performance manager Shane Hutton called the decision a "great loss to the team" but stayed upbeat with the women's team pursuit squad looking one of the strongest medal hopes, following this year's world title performance in Apeldoorn.

"It's a shame to lose an Olympic Champion going into the Olympic year but looking ahead, we have some great young talent in addition to experienced riders in the team pursuit squad," he said.

"I'm confident we can remain on track to hit our performance targets in the lead up to and during the London Olympic Games."

The Surrey-born speedster became the first Briton to compete in two different sports in the Olympics and the second woman in history to medal in two disciplines when she added gold in Beijing to a silver medal won in rowing at the Athens Games four years earlier.

Romero, who was awarded an MBE for her efforts, did not say whether she was quitting all competitive cycling.

She missed out on the most recent Worlds after coming fourth in the UK nationals.
