Sardinian club Cagliari won the 'Derby delle Isole' against Sicily's Palermo after they won 2-1 at the Stadio Sant'Elia.

Palermo, Cagliari - 0

Mauricio Pinilla, on loan at Cagliari, struck against his parent club to open the scoring before having a hand in the second, which was netted by Daniele Dessena.

Abel Hernandez pulled a goal back from the penalty spot in the final 10 minutes, but Cagliari held on for a well-deserved win.

The victory moves Cagliari up to eighth in the table, just one place and one point below Palermo ahead of the weekend's other Serie A fixtures around mainland Italy.

After a strong start from Palermo which saw Cagliari keeper save Edgar Barreto's low shot and tip another strike across goal wide, Cagliari began to take control of the match.

Davide Ballardini was forced into an early change when he replaced the injured Andrea Cossu with Vctor Ibarbo on just six minutes, but the Colombian substitute helped the home side look the more threatening as the half progressed.

Ibarbo forced a save from Emiliano Viviano and Dessena hit the rebound right at the keeper.

Despite their dominance, Cagliari were unable to take the lead before half-time, but they did make the breakthrough 10 minutes after the break.

Ibarbo played a one-two and broke into the Palermo box. From the byline he fired a low ball across the six-yard box and Pinilla was unmarked to slide in for a close-range finish for his second goal in four matches since making the hop from one island to another.

With 10 minutes remaining the points looked safe, and once again Pinilla was involved. The Chilean struck a low free-kick which was parried by Viviano, and Dessena was the quickest to react and finish from the rebound.

Just moments later, however, Dessena let Palermo back into the match when he blocked a shot with his hand inside the box.

Hernandez coolly slotted his spot-kick right into the far bottom corner for his fourth league goal of the season, but it was not enough to stop the 22nd 'Derby delle Isole' going Cagliari's way.
