Manchester City and Manchester United ground out a tepid 0-0 draw as Michael Essien's goal earned Chelsea a 1-0 victory over Fulham and a four-point lead in the Premier League on Wednesday.

United won both league meetings against their mega-rich neighbours last season with last-gasp goals but had to settle for a point as neither side did enough to justify victory.

Essien's first-half effort was enough for Chelsea to extend their lead although the Ghanaian blotted his copybook when he was sent off in the closing minutes against Fulham at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have 28 points from 12 games with United on 24 and Arsenal, for whom Marouane Chamakh scored both goals in a 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers, third on 23. City complete the top four on 21.

Andy Carroll scored again for fifth-placed Newcastle United but his side slipped to a 2-1 home defeat by Blackburn Rovers.

Fernando Torres made it three goals in two games for Liverpool but his classy first-half strike only earned a 1-1 draw at lowly Wigan Athletic.

Blackpool went down 3-2 at Aston Villa and Everton equalised late in a 1-1 draw with Bolton Wanderers. West Ham United remained bottom after drawing 2-2 at home to West Bromwich Albion.

On Tuesday, Tottenham Hotspur suffered another setback when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sunderland at White Hart Lane, where a week ago they overwhelmed European champions Inter Milan.

That night's other match was full of action as Birmingham City, 2-0 down at Stoke City, fought back to 2-2 for the second time in four days only for the hosts to snatch a winner after four successive league defeats.
