Zabel to replace Cyclassics honcho
Former sprint ace Erik Zabel has been named directeur sportif of the Vattenfall Cyclassics, the only German race on the World Tour calendar.
The 40-year-old will eventually succeed long-time race director Roland Hofer.
“I am looking forward to being allowed to grow into this new assignment,” Zabel said.
This year's race will be held in Hamburg on August 21, when American sprint king Tyler Farrar will seek to win the title for a third successive year.
Zabel won the race once during his distinguished career in the saddle which saw him claim over 200 wins, including six green jerseys and 12 stages of the Tour de France.
He retired from racing in 2008 and has since worked with HTC-Colombia and in particular Mark Cavendish.
