Lee Mansell's 26th minute header proved enough to move Torquay up three places to second in npower League Two with a gutsy 1-0 win away to play-off chasing Rotherham.
Crawley lost more ground in their automatic promotion push and they had a late strike from Billy Clarke to thank for avoiding defeat against Aldershot.
Aaron Morris gave the Shots a fourth minute lead before Gary Alexander equalised through a 33rd minute penalty. Peter Vincenti put Aldershot back in front on 63 before Clarke replied two minutes from time.
Northampton jumped three places to 19th after a 1-0 win away to Dagenham and Redbridge, who remain rooted to the bottom of the table. Toni Brito Silva scored the only goal on 62 minutes.
Jack Midson scored twice in AFC Wimbledon's 3-1 win over Bradford. Midson opened the scoring on 33 then Pim Balkestein equalised three minutes later.
Bradford had Craig Fagan sent off for a second bookable offence on 38 minutes and Wimbledon controlled the second half with on-loan Sunderland player Billy Knott putting them back in front on 54 and Midson's second penalty settling matters on 75.
