The 32-year-old moved to the Bernabeu for a reported fee of 6.7million to re-united with Mourinho, who has managed his compatriot during spells at Chelsea and Porto.

Carvalho flew in to Madrid on Wednesday night before passing a medical on Thursday morning in the Spanish capital, and the Portugal centre-back said moving to Real was something he had targeted for a long time.

"This step in my career was very important to me," Carvalho told Marca."I have long wanted to play for Real Madrid."

The Portuguese was then presented to the Spanish media after signing a two-year contract, and took the opportunity to explain that Mourinho's stewardship of the club clinched the move.

Carvalho said: "Mourinho wherever he goes, he wins. It is a great coach, as has already been demonstrated. Players have full confidence in him."
