Heather Watson's promising run at the AEGON Championships was ended as she was beaten 6-3 4-6 6-1 by Italy's Roberta Vinci in their third-round match.

Great Britain's Heather Watson walks back to her seat dejected after losing the first set tie break to China's Shuai Peng - 0

Watson, who recorded wins over fellow Brit Elena Baltacha in the second round and Paula Ormaechea of Argentina in her opening match, saw her progress ended abruptly by the Italian.

Vinci took the opening set with some ruthless returning as the Brit struggled to find a rhythm on serve, and it was always going to be tough battling from behind.

But Watson surged back to take the second set with a crucial break of serve separating the two players as the Edgbaston crowd roared on their player.

Vinci was undeterred, however, and capitalised on superior energy and intensity in the deciding set as Watson faded.

The Brit was only able to record a solitary game in the final set as she was comprehensively beaten by the Italian.

Vinci will next take on Jie Zheng of China, who defeated Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic in their third-round clash.

Elsewhere in the draw Jelena Jankovic progressed after Casey Dellacqua withdrew, while eight seed Ekaterina Makarova moved on with a 2-6 6-1 6-3 victory over Marina Erakovic.

Melanie Oudin routed Elena Vesnina 6-0 6-2, while Irina Falconi was also a straight sets victor, dispatching Urszula Radwanska 7-5 6-3.

13th seed Hsieh Su-Wei advanced to the quarter-finals, while Stephanie Foretz Gacon and Misaki Doi will have to resume their match on Friday after rain intervened with the Japanese leading 6-4 2-2.

  1. Apologies that the below is not to do with sport but is world’s most serious issue. Not that I in any way am in favor of the 9/11 attacks, but the website below proves that religion was not the motive of the attacks. Go to wikipedia website then type in ‘Motives_for_the_September_11_attacks’ The website above shows evidence that Osama was responsible and the motives were because of the actions of the US and Israeli government and their relationship in the past and present. On the other hand some conspiracy theorists believe that the attacks were organized by Israelis in the US to create wars, bigotry and divisions between Christianity and Islam so that the Christian world can see the Muslims as the bad guys instead of the Israelis. Whatever is true, the truth is a religion of more than 1.6 Billion followers can’t be responsible for blame, those non Muslims who know Islam is a good religion by learning from the Koran should stand up against US bigots . Sadly in the modern day USA Islamophobia is still near its peak 11 years after 2001, about half of the country is in favor of the Afghan War and more than half of USA think Bush is a war hero as opposed to a War Criminal for killing over a million Iraqis. You only need a few brain cells to realize that Israel is in the wrong for occupying Palestine for over 60 years continuously killing civilian life and that troops should be withdrawn from Afghanistan as there is no justification for such a long war. People should communicate this to the Americans and the ones who are in the wrong need to realize that they are in the wrong.
