Taylor Phinney took the leader's jersey at the 36th Giro del Trentino after his BMC team won the opening flat team time trial around the Riva del Garda area.
BMC posted a time of 15:50 over the 14.3km route that finished in Arco. That was 10 seconds quicker than the Astana squad of Roman Kreuziger with Colnago third, three seconds further back.
"The whole team worked well together and we were really strong," former US national time trial champion Phinney said.
"There wasn't really a plan at the finish line on who would be first to finish. I just wanted to help give us the best time."
The Lampre team of triple Trentino winner Damiano Cunego and defending champion Michele Scarponi were hampered by a crash involving Matthew Lloyd and Morris Possoni and finished 23 seconds off the winning time.
The Liquigas squad of Ivan Basso only finished with five riders but were sixth in 16:09.
The race is good preparation for the Giro d'Italia with those who will be going for pink in May wanting to test their condition on Trentino’s slopes.
The four-day event continues with a undulating 152km stage to Sant'Orsola Terme in the enchanting Valle dei Ṃcheni before iconic summit finishes on the Punta Veleno and Passo Pordoi on the final two days.
Phinney is realistic about his chances of keeping the lead. "The stages here are full of climbing and really difficult and I'm not exactly a climber," he said. "But I'll do everything I can to help keep the jersey within the team."
