The Lithuanian, who rides for the Ireland-based An Post team, was part of a six-man escape group that formed on the 199km stage from Bury St Edmunds.

The sextet featuring Sigma Sport-Specialized's Wouter Sybrandy, Topsport Vlaanderen rider Stijn Neirynck, Europcar's Mathieu Claude, Team Raleigh's Richard Handley and Ian Wilkinson of Endura Racing managed to build a lead of six minutes.

That advantage was whittled down by the finish where the 25-year-old beat Lancashire's Wilkinson to the line.

Mark Cavendish led the peloton over the line in seventh place, 1:23 behind the winner.

Dutchman Lars Boom of Rabobank retains his 28 second lead on GC ahead of Sunday's split stage, a 8.8km time trial in the morning followed by a 10-lap circuit race in London in the afternoon.
