Tongan qualifies for first time
Tonga's Bruno Banani will compete in a World Cup luge event for the first time after coming 18th in qualifying in Calgary.
Banani made his luge debut just two years ago, on the Olympic track in Calgary, when he finished in 41st place.
American Taylor Morris and Evgeniy Voskresensky of Russia qualified in top spot, the pair recording identical times. Third place went to Germany’s Ralf Palik.
In the women's field, Italy's Sandra Gasparini emerged top of the timesheets ahead of Emily Sweeney of the US and Canada’s Kim McRae.
The women's gold medal race will be held on Friday while the men's title will be decided on Saturday.
