Kamke, the 2010 ATP newcomer of the year, was one of three German players to score upsets on the opening day of the tournament as compatriots Bastian Knittel and Julian Riester followed him through.

Qualifier Knittel notched his first tour-level victory of the year when he beat Ivan Dodig of Croatia 6-4 6-3, while Riester beat Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin 6-3 6-4.

Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky had an easier time of it and required just 65 minutes to see off Maximo Gonzalez 6-2 6-3.

Former world number 13 Jarkko Nieminen, competing in his first tournament since a first round exit at Wimbledon, was also in good form as he beat Santiago Giraldo 6-4 6-3 in 73 minutes.

Argentine's Carlos Berlocq beat Robin Haase 6-2 6-2, Lukas Rosol knocked out Potito Starace 7-6(5) 6-1 and qualifiers Albert Ramos and Victor Crivoi also progressed.
