Muller holds off local hope in Moscow

Seventh seed Gilles Muller fought his way past local qualifier Konstantin Kravchuk to make the second round of ATP Moscow.

Luxembourg star Muller thundered down 19 aces, but was forced to save three break points in the second set as he won 7-6(5) 6-4 against the Russian journeyman, ranked 165th in the world.

Muller will face Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second round, the German having beaten Argentina's Carlos Berlocq 7-5 6-3.

Fifth seed Alex Bogomolov Jr came through a two-hour battle against 21-year-old Serbian Dusan Lajovic.

Bogomolov lost the opening set against the world number 239, but fought back to win 3-6 6-3 6-4 after a third set in which both players had a string of opportunities to close things out.

Russian sixth seed Dmitry Tursunov cheered home fans as he beat Spain's Albert Ramos 7-6(5) 6-4, while Jeremy Chardy is also in the second round after beating Potito Starace 6-3 6-7(5) 7-6(2).
