Pietropolli claims Trofeo Laigueglia
Lampre-ISD's Daniele Pietropolli claimed a thrilling sprint victory to take the Trofeo Laigueglia in Italy.
The 30-year-old Italian has already won the three-stage Giro della Provincia di Reggio Calabria this season, and maintained his winning form by edging Simone Ponzi (Liquigas-Cannondale) and Angelo Vicioso (Androni Giocattoli) in a perfectly-timed sprint finish.
Team Katusha's Pavel Brutt and Acqua & Sapone's Jose Cayetano Sarmiento led the day's early break, but were reeled in by the peloton with 40km remaining.
Giro d'Italia champion Ivan Basso (Liquigas-Cannondale) forced another break some 25km from the finish, which led to an elite group of 34 contesting the run-in to Laigueglia's sprint finish.
Second-placed Ponzi looked a certainty to reach the finish line first, but Pietropolli timed his aggressive acceleration perfectly to pip his Italian compatriot at the death.
"I've been a professional for eight seasons and if you look at the results of various editions of Laigueglia, you'll find me in every position from second to tenth," Pietropolli said after finally winning the Ligurian event. "I was missing first place and I'm just so happy to have done it."
