Luxembourg's Muller 6-3 7-6(6) struggled to close out the match in the second set tie breaker, having been 5-1 up only to be pegged back before finally securing victory on his fifth match point.

Muller now goes on to meet the winner of Robby Ginepri's clash with Tommy Haas in the second round.

American James Blake battled through to the next round with a marathon 5-7 7-6 6-2 win over Ernests Gulbis of Latvia that was delayed by rain.

Michael Russell also won through after downing fellow America Donald Young 6-0 6-3 in the first match of the pre-US Open summer hardcourt season.

Russell progressed with little fuss, seeing out the win in just 72 minutes to book a date with South African second seed Kevin Anderson.
