Real Betis saw their winless La Liga run extended to eight games after Borja Valero struck in a 1-0 win for Villarreal at El Madrigal.

Villarreal - who had managed only one win in their past seven Liga outings - were without Giuseppe Rossi, Cani, Nilmar and Cristian Zapata, but struck the decisive goal when Valero broke free from Marco Ruben's pass to hoist the ball over visiting keeper Casto for a fine winner on 21 minutes.

Betis have now failed to score in their last five Liga fixtures; the first time they have gone five consecutive top-flight games without finding the net.

In truth, they should have got at least a point from this match, but paid the price for failing to put the ball in the back of the home net.

Jorge Molina wasted two chances to bring Betis level before half-time as Gonzalo dashed back to make a timely intervention when he seemed likely to net from close range on 21 minutes.

Molina then lifted a volley over the bar from 12 yards out after somehow finding himself unmarked amid a sea of yellow shirts marking fresh air.

Valero stung the palms of Casto on 64 minutes with a powerful drive before the goalkeeper repelled Bruno's header from Jonathan De Guzman's delivery, but it made little difference in the final analysis.

Villarreal leapfrog Betis in the standings with this win, moving up to 10th place on 14 points, a point clear of Betis who have 13 points from their 12 fixtures.
