Velits wraps up victory in Tour of Oman
Peter Velits sealed overall victory in the Tour of Oman as Marcel Kittel won the final stage of the six-stage race.
German Kittel beat out Peter Sagan and Tyler Farrar in a sprint finish in the 130.5km stage between Al Khawd and the Matrah Corniche.
Velits finished in the peloton, one place ahead of stage five winner Vincenzo Nibali, who had to settle for second in the general classification, a single second behind Velits after six days of cycling.
Tony Gallopin of France completed the overall podium.
"It's a great day, one of the best in my career," Velits said. "During the race there was only a moment of panic when Nibali seemed to have gotten second place behind Boonen during the intermediate sprint. Luckily it was just a mistake in transcribing numbers from radio infos and the momentary fear quickly dissipated.
"The team controlled the race perfectly, easily taking me to the finish line. It's my first win in a stage race, I am very happy. It's a great beginning to the season, even though I'm aware the big races are still to come."
