Hewitt blasts through in Atlanta
Former world number one Hewitt was in fine form as he dismantled the American 6-4 6-4, recording an impressive 89 per cent on his first-serve points.
Hewitt, now ranked at a career-low 174 following foot surgery, is 9-7 so far this season and will look to improve that record further when he meets Rajeev Ram in the next round.
American Ram booked his place in the second round with a 6-4 6-4 upset of fifth seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.
Another seed to tumble on day two of action at the Racquet Club of the South was Russia's Igor Kunitsyn, the sixth seed falling 6-7(3) 6-2 7-5 to another Australian Marinko Matosevic.
Local favourites Robby Ginepri and Ryan Harrison both progressed after respective wins over Germany's Tommy Haas and Yuichi Sugita of Japan, while Nicolas Mahut won through following his 7-6(5) 6-2 win over Richard Berankis of Lithuania.
Rounding off the day's action in Georgia was Taiwan's Lu Yen-Hsun, who downed German Matthias Bachinger 7- 7-6(4) to ensure his safe passage into the second round.
