Arsene Wenger is confident his Arsenal side are continuing to head in the right direction after watching Aaron Ramsey steal a 1-0 Champions League win in Marseille.

Wenger has now overseen five wins in six matches in all competitions and believes the confidence is coming back.

Ramsey, a late substitute at the Stade Velodrome, did his part to contribute to the growing feel-good factor with an expertly taken injury-time finish for the only goal of a match that looked destined for stalemate.

Wenger said: "We are a team who must continue to grow and we have to show that. The game at home to Marseille will be very important. Yes, this will help us with our confidence but if you look back at the last six games you will see we only have one defeat. We are slowly getting there and tonight will help."

Wales captain Ramsey has been struggling with a hamstring strain and Wenger, having lost Jack Wilshere to injury this season after placing a heavy workload on the midfielder last term, opted not to play him from the start.

He hinted he would like to continue treating his match-winner with kid gloves but was delighted to have him on the pitch when the key chance came.

"I do not want to overplay him," said Wenger.

"I've seen in my mind that he has been injured for a year and that Wilshere played a lot last year (and is now injured). I try to be a bit more cautious when I can. But it was a great finish. When you see Aaron Ramsey in front of goal you know you have a good chance to score. He is a goalscorer."

CL reaction: Arsenal - Mar

Marseille boss Didier Deschamps acknowledged his side had run out of legs in the second half but was frustrated to see his side surrender the points right at the end.

He said: "We are very disappointed to lose this game. We had a warning right before the goal with Robin van Persie. I was angry because I had warned them. One point would have been good for us. It was a game of not many opportunities and this is cruel and disappointing for us.

"It was more difficult for us in the second half. Arsenal had more possession and we lost the ball too easily. We put a lot of effort in in the first half and we couldn't recreate that in the second half."
