Freire signs with Katusha
Three-time world champion Oscar Freire has signed for Russian team Katusha for the 2012 season.
The move will see the Spaniard leave Dutch team Rabobank who he has raced with since 2003.
"I know many riders from Katusha and I am fully motivated and in condition for the upcoming season and will try my best to give Katusha as much success as possible," said Freire.
"On the other hand, it will be a pleasure for me to teach young riders and share my experience with them."
Igor Makarov, the president of the Russian cycling federation, admitted they signed Freire as much to help develop young riders as to bring success to the team.
"In the world of sports, Oscar is one of the most impressive riders of the last decades. That's why, I think he will provide a huge influence to the development of young riders of Katusha Team," he said.
As well as winning the world road title in 1999, 2001 and 2004, Freire has won four stages at the Tour de France, the green jersey in 2008, seven stages at the Vuelta and three Milan-San Remo titles.
