Monfils was a break down in the third set before finally rallying back at 4-4 and then winning the final two games of the match.

"It was a tough match," admitted Monfils.

“Bernard plays good. He’s young, he’s strong, he’s coming in great. He has a tricky game also.

“It’s not easy to come back on tour after struggling with injuries, so to find the rhythm was a bit tough, but still I think I played a tough match and it was great for me today.”

Elsewhere, Jarkko Nieminen continued his good form in this tournament with an upset 6-3 6-4 win over third-seed Stanislas Wawrinka. The Finn has twice been runner-up in the Swedish capital.

Bulgarian prospect Grigor Dimitrov also caused an upset as he beat Argentine Juan Ignacio Chela 6-2 5-7 6-1 to reach his fourth quarter-final of the year.

While, David Nalbandian rolled back the years to beat seventh seed Ivan Dodig 6-1 6-1
