Michael Albasini (GreenEdge) made it two wins out of two at the Volta a Catalunya as General Classification contender Alejandro Valverde lost valuable time on stage two.

Albasini won a sprint finish from an elite group of 31 riders ahead of Dario Cataldo (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) and Rigoberto Uran (Team Sky) after a 161km loop around Girona, which included a category one climb late on that broke up the peloton.

Valverde's problems did not come on the category one-rated climb Alt dels Angels whose summit was situated 14km from the finish but rather when he suffered a puncture - and despite the best efforts of his Movistar team, he lost 2:09 on the leaders, potentially wrecking his chances of winning the race.

Daniel Martin (Garmin-Barracuda) attacked over the summit of Alt dels Angels and was then joined on the descent by Damiano Cunego (Lampre-ISD) and Matteo Carrara (Vacansoleil-DCM). However they were reeled in, with Team Sky's Bradley Wiggins doing much of the work to help team-mate Uran.

However, Swiss speedster Albasini had the pace over the final 200m to wrap up another victory for his new team and keep the leader's jersey in the process. He holds a 1:32 lead over the bunch.

The seven-stage Volta a Catalunya continues on Wednesday with the race's longest stage, a 210.9km trek from La Vall d'en Bas (Sant Esteve d'en Bas) to Port-Ainé.
